NUS’s Intergenerational Courses

NUS’s Intergenerational Courses

Bridging the Generation Gap

Two new credit-bearing courses aimed at bringing people of all ages to learn, share and build stronger bonds across generations are offered to undergraduates at NUS’s Residential College 4 (RC4).

Since January 2024, the two courses, titled “Rethinking Ageing: Potential for Integration” and “Rethinking Age: Potential for Connection”, encourage students to rethink common assumptions about ageing and explore how different generations can work together meaningfully.

Students will encounter key concepts in service learning and intergenerational bonding to critically reflect on their actions and broaden their interpersonal capacities. Through a service learning project, students will identify community needs via the approach of Systems Thinking.

Led by Dr Lynette Tan (Senior Lecturer and Director of Studies at RC4), with support from Associate Professor Thang Leng Leng (NUS Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences), these courses see the undergraduates interacting closely with Queenstown Secondary School students and older people from FaithActs and Esther Active Ageing Centres over 12 weeks.
