Assistive Technologies: Fall Detection Technologies

Falls are a common health risk, especially for older adults. Around the world, 36 million falls are reported each year. In Singapore, about 13.4% of seniors aged 65 and above experience a fall annually.

To help address this, Health District @ Queenstown has been exploring fall detection technology. These systems use non-intrusive sensors to detect sudden movements and identify when someone may have fallen and remains on the ground. When a fall is detected, the device alerts a family member or care provider.

HDB tested these systems in selected Queenstown flats from November 2022 to February 2023. Based on residents' feedback, technology providers improved the accuracy of the detectors.

With the successful trial, HDB is now working with commercial vendors to make fall detection packages available to all HDB households.
